HKCNSA Helps to Reach Out to Campuses - Seminar on "Personal Data Privacy Protection in Higher Education" co-organized by PCPD and HKU



On July 11, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and Information Technology Services and Data Privacy Office of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) co-organized a seminar on "Personal Data Privacy Protection in Higher Education", which attracted more than 100 participants from the higher education sector.



Ms. Chandy Ye, Director of the Hong Kong China Network Security Association's Data Privacy Committee, attended the seminar. Together with Ms. Athene Cheung, a member of the Association and representative of HKU's Information Technology Services and Data Privacy Office, Ms. Lee Hiu-ying, Senior Legal Counsel of PCPD, and Mr. Lam Ka Ki, the HKIRC's Cybersecurity Manager, discussed how higher education can strengthen cybersecurity and the challenges related to personal data privacy. In the seminar, Ms. Clemence Wong Po-man, Legal Counsel of the PCPD, presented the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance's legal requirements.



With increasing exchange activities between institutions in Hong Kong and the Mainland, the seminar guests also discussed how to meet the cross-border legal requirements for data. In addition, with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), how the higher education sector can make better and safer use of AI technology and deal with the associated cybersecurity risks also came to the forefront of discussion.

Through the seminar, university staff from different disciplines were able to better understand the requirements of relevant laws and regulations, recognize the challenges of personal data protection, and increase their awareness of cybersecurity. With the help of this event, the higher education sector can further enhance the protection of personal data privacy and cybersecurity.
